Valley Primary Academy

Transition

‘Transition’ usually refers to children moving between different phases of education.

The most significant transition points for children at Valley Primary Academy are starting in reception and leaving primary school in year 6 to start high school (secondary).

Starting Reception

All families will be invited for a welcome meeting and play session. Some children, for example those with SEND, may need additional support. This could include:

  • Additional visits to the classroom to become accustomed to the new environment.
  • Social stories and photo stories to share over the summer.
  • Individual meetings with families and pre-school settings.
  • Support from external agencies such as ECFS or the School and Communities Team.

Starting High School

In the summer term, all children in year 6 complete activities in class to prepare for the transition to high school. There are opportunities for children and for families to visit.

Some children, for example those with SEND, may need additional support. This could include:

  • Additional visits within a small group.
  • A visit from the high school SENCo or other SEN support staff.
  • Completing the ‘My New School’ intervention.
  • Small group or 1:1 support from the School and Communities Team.
  • Small group support from the Shaw Trust through the ‘YESS to Progress’ programme.
